aab (aab@khp.ignorelist.com)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Dec-2022 22:55:59 JST aab @cgervasi I totally get it, and (mostly) agree with you. It's just that billionaires (and particulary bigtech ones) have proven time after time that their bussiness model is to make society worse. I know, it's subjective, but I think widely agreed upon.
I mean, what platforms have been crucial to spread bigotry and conspiracy theories? The ones from the bigtech billionaires. -

I don't want to silence bigots, but I don't want to talk to them. It would be unfortunate if that leaves me in a small echo chamber. I want different ideas, but not bigotry because that derails other conversations. I wonder if that's not possible.

aab (aab@khp.ignorelist.com)'s status on Wednesday, 21-Dec-2022 00:58:49 JST aab @cgervasi I hear you. I've seen lots of "fake news" in newspapers and TV long before social media.
But it's quite clear to me that me that "the old world of gatekeepers" include the bigtech companies.
The thing happening in the #Fediverse right now (well, it has been for some years, but now we are more people), although not perfect (and possibly will never be) seems to me the path to follow: self-regulating communities. And of course: sure, a more democratic way of moderation is desirable, and most of the big instances will have a bad time sooner or later because of the high number of people.
... And right now I'm not sure if we are talking about the same thing. Sorry, really big issues in discussion here, and it's harder to express them in english for me 😅 -

The papers sometimes didn't publish even reasonable letters to the editor. Now everyone can get published for free, including conspiracy theorists who in the past would have handed out fliers or just groused to themselves. I don't want the old world of gatekeepers.

> You seem like a native speaker of English
Thanks for that! I don't think that's true, but thanks nonetheless :)
> Español es mi segundo idioma. Me cuesta mucho más trabajo hablar español que inglés.
Yeah, then you know perfectly what I mean. For a casual conversation, I'm ok with english, but when things get nuanced, I spend a lot of time trying to make myself clear.
Anyway, espero que disfrutes en #Mastodon y en el #Fediverso :) -
Charles J Gervasi ⚡ (cgervasi@fosstodon.org)'s status on Wednesday, 21-Dec-2022 04:24:39 JST Charles J Gervasi ⚡ @aab I really like #Mastodon and the Internet, i.e. not centralized social media. I like that racists can set up an instance and have a high-quality platform talk to one another, and I don't have to read it or have it disrupt normal conversations.
You seem like a native speaker of English. Español es mi segundo idioma. Me cuesta mucho más trabajo hablar español que inglés.
