@jeremiah git has features that help you when you have a massive project with many people with commit rights. I don't think any other free VCS competes with that. Git and Mercurial are very similar for smaller projects except Mercurial is simpler to use
At this point though network effect means more people are using git so you probably should use git so I can't completely disagree with you. -

@jeremiah I got proficient with Mercurial first and when you do that, git just looks like mercurial with needless added complexity. -

@jeremiah I've got basic git skills at this point though so it's not a big deal. New stuff I use git because that's what gitlab supports. -
