@shpuld @Olivia in japan virtually everyone uses plastic bags. big chonky grocery paper bags are really rare. people reuse plastic bags as trash bin liners and stingy old folk bring them back to the grocery for a second time around.

i use paper cuz it's easier to stack.

i dont feel like being reply guy today but paper bags aren't really that much better than plastic when it comes to the environment. the tradeoff is that plastic is obviously worse if you want to reduce landfill usage (because they don't decompose) but paper is worse when it comes to emissions and energy required to process. it's not really as clear cut as PLASTIC == BAD. even recycled, the energy required to reprocess a paper bag into something useful again is a lot more than the one time energy expenditure of taking natural gas byproduct and turning it into plastic bags. people don't get how much fuckin energy recycling costs.

none of what i just said matters because policy is decided by what sounds right, and political convenience. there are a lot more impactful policies one could enact that would do a thousand times more impact without inconviniencing the plebians like stricter bilge water enforcement and fining shareholders of companies who cheat on emissions testing.

@Olivia just be honest and ban stuff. implementing and retracting a ban is way simpler than piling on more shit to the infinite list of things that are taxed because someone in 2020 decided it was a good idea at the time.
