speaking a word aloud causes pressure oscillations in the air, vibrations in an eardrum etc etc. there is a direct chain of physical effects which can affect another physical human body, and thus a piece of the world, in the same way as punching that piece-of-the-world in the face -

at what point, then, does the "autonomy" of those mechanisms become "real autonomy"? when a simple computer is attached to a printer? when the computer is embedded in a robot that can move around on its own? when a robot is able to create a second and third robot?
like any "information", a computer's internals are just a bunch of physical pieces which happen to behave in a particular way, and the same can be said of our brains. if you have an idea, it's a physical configuration of your insides that physically interacts with and directs your outsides. if you transmit an idea into someone else's head, you have physically changed that person, inducing some physical behaviour -

really disappointed with that stuff from ann leckie, like started off with something genuinely interesting, the concept of being an "i" that is simultaneously just a working part inside of a larger emergent "i", similar to a brain being composed of individual cells working in tandem
but then in the second of those books it immediately devolves into a warrior-of-justice fetish like superman v nazis or something, just (´･ω･`) -

there's a natural trend of "fetishising the other" sort of inherent to the mindset of fetishising itself. to have a fetish/fixation on something, that thing must be somehow distinguishable from its surroundings, and this distinction is what's latched onto and fetishised. and so when most of the people who have money, and thus power, happen look a certain way, there is a tendency for them to naturally become "interested" in people who look differently from that way and what they're "used to".
economic/family/community security plays directly into that. i'm not personally qualified to slap numbers on that, of course, but i have heard at some point, i think it was russell means who mentioned at some point that the navajo nation is best off in the nation numbers-wise, and living here in arizona i regularly interact with member of that community who still definitely talk about and exhibit this feeling of being second-class citizens in their own country
so yes, fetishisation is an inherent human thing to do, present in any community, and it's a difference in social influence that allows those fetishes to be acted upon by force (mexican girls being smuggled across the border and sold off in parking lots at malls etc)
as a secondary note, there is, though, some complication that comes from our sort of innate preferences driven by the phenomenon of genetic recognition. that, for example, pairings in the us between white woman and black men are much more common than pairings between black women and white men, which largely has to do with certain physical characteristics, like pronounced skeleture ("strong cheekbones/chins" among other things) which are more common in the "black" genetic lines than in the "white" ones, meaning the people who prefer these "more masculine" traits, usually women, tend to subconsciously select more often for those who have them, and the people who like "less masculine" traits for those. the inverse of this relationship can also be seen in the frequency of pairings between east asian women and white men, and since north american populations share some genetic heritage with east asian popultions, a similar effect may be happening there. i do still see this, though, as more of a modifier rather than a root cause -

....eh, i'd think it's more likely tied to their being trapped in ghettos without the means to self-sustain and that they're trapped in a cycle of depressed, alcoholic parents giving birth to soon-disaffected children who are denied work because they're seen as useless because they're depressed and drunk because they're denied work because they're seen as useless and so on, creating resource-poor broken families that can't take care of themselves and thus are exploited in the ways such less-equal classes are always exploited -

it really saddens me how my generation of writers has become infected with the sjw mind-virus. at the same time we've been freed from the capitalist constraints of the publishing industry by the existence of the internet, so many have donned a new set of shackles completely unnecessarily, shackles that keep them from writing anything but bland, terminally inoffensive representation porn that says nothing interesting and conveys no new ideas. structurally it's different from the Hays Code only in that it's a grassroots phenomenon rather than one imposed from the top - it neuters storytelling in exactly the same way, for exactly the same reason.
we don't need more stories about mary sues. we don't need more stories whose every word is shaped by the author's terror of Offending an extremely thin-skinned affinity group that demands constant, unthinking worship and screams "oppression" when they are treated as ordinary human beings. the only characters who are allowed to have flaws, allowed to have complex individualities, allowed to be gritty and complicated and *human* are, of course, the Straight White Cisgender Heterosexual Etc Males, who are the only demographic available to serve as villains.
ironically, in requiring the "marginalized"¹ be treated with kid gloves, this unwritten Woke Code denies them their humanity just as much as the one-dimensional racism, homophobia, and misogyny of decades past. to err is human, as the saying goes - failure and growth and change are what separates fleshed-out three-dimensional characters from Mary Sues, from wish-fulfillment self-insertion like My Immortal or Black Panther.
but setting aside the way this style of writing diminishes and dehumanizes those it aims to lift up, what drives me up the fucking wall is the unbearable sameness of it all. nobody seems interested in telling - or hearing - anything but IEEE-standarized heroic narratives. at a time when the acidic rot of capitalism is gnawing rapidly through the foundation of our culture and society, we should be exploring new kinds of existence, new possibilities, new ways of organizing our communities and our lives, new ways of wielding political power against the decadent, degenerate, transcendentally cruel and selfish bourgeoisie.
"social fiction" - whether literary or genre - can help to radicalize simply by planting the seeds of new ideas. whether it's simple propaganda that aims to communicate the basic principles of marxism in an easily digestible way and show what an ideal socialist nation can be without shying away from the difficult parts (in other words, *not* a simplistic solarpunk utopia), or drama that tells a story set amid radically new ideas, fiction can serve to break people's minds out of the prisons of capitalism and individualism, by helping them imagine what for most of their lives has been unimaginable: an alternative.
instead, we get this wretched, simplistic pap - empty, useless inspiration porn that is all functionally identical and serves no useful purpose, not even to entertain.
we can do better than this.
