A great article about the Boeing 737 Max issue, and the general tendencies in engineering that lead to it:
    https://spectrum.ieee.org/aerospace/aviation/how-the-boeing-737-max-disaster-looks-to-a-software-developer

"the relative ease—not to mention the lack of tangible cost—of software updates has created a cultural laziness within the software engineering community. Moreover, because more and more of the hardware that we create is monitored and controlled by software, that cultural laziness is now creeping into hardware engineering—like building airliners."

Hearing-impaired eletrical engineering researcher Jess Boland discovered that weren't enough technical terms in British Sign Language to cover the mathematics she uses in her work, so she's been creating new ones as well as promoting the ones BSL already had. Katie Steckles interviews her for The Aperiodical.

About mmn-o recommending Pleroma instead, I believe that was prior to the recent attempts of restoring active development on GS, we are honestly working on it: https://go.diogo.site/gsoc2019

Naturally, if in the end one opts for Pleroma or for GS, that's a matter of preference and both will have their advantages and disadvantages.

This year I'm a mentor on GS's SoC with @dansup and @MMN-o. High requirements were set and I'm demanding a lot from the applicants on their proposals. It will be hard work but I believe we will be successful :)

@Gargron yes it was, mine. And the AP plugin implements AP. It needs HTTP signatures and OStatus de-duplication now.

We will be implementing those this summer.

I'm upgrading my T430 to full 1080p, but accidentally ordered the converter board for a T430s. I was able to remove the S-model connector and jam a normal T430 connector into the input port, but have no idea if this will actually work yet.

    Any ideas, Mastodon?

Hi! I'm a #guix contributor and some of the cool things about it are the ability to have a central declarative configuration for your whole system, the fact that you can install incompatible software (for instance if they require a different version of some dependency), the per-user profiles (and more, but with no nice UI), the reproducibility and the temporary environment (à la pypi, but much better). Feel free to ask more about these ?

"Despite China’s recent attempts to clean up the pollution, it will be a long time before the air is clean again. We should have kept our environment clean to begin with instead of trying to fix it after the damage is done." - Wenqing Yan (Yuumei)

    Yuumei's thought relates to George Carlin's Saving the Planet ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7W33HRc1A6c ).

I guess campaigns entitled or with ambitions set on saving the planet may become more effective if they target humans instead.

I remember from school days of stuff like the earth day as noted on Carlin's video and I think it doesn't really accomplish the desired effect. I guess the younger kids will remember it as something for the earth and maybe the other animals inhabiting it but not the humans. And, if it isn't about them nor affecting them directly: "why bother?".

The unfortunate "why bother?" attitude triggered by others' issues is also referred in Carlin's video as a first problem to tackle in order to actually make change and thrive. How so?

From Complex Systems Theory we have phenomena as emergence where some spontaneous order seems to arise from self-interested individuals. As noted by Fernando Pessoa in "The only social reality is the individual" ( http://arquivopessoa.net/textos/1767 ) - Aristoteles said that "The society exists for the individual, not the individual for the society" - in the words of Pessoa:

"Being the individual the only social reality, the egoism is the only real quality, although, by many disguises and artifices, in the course of social evolution (I don't say of progress, because I don't know - nor does anyone know - whether there is progress) altruistic feelings, tuning of the instincts.

So that the individual may have a social life that is a development element, or, in other words, so that the society is a favorable environment to his development, it is mandatory to settle such society in a egoistic concept. Therefore, nations are naturally formed. A nation is the second primary social element. Humanity doesn't group fraternally other than by opposition. We always unite so we can oppose. This is, actually, a logic principle: define is to limit.".

Later on the same text: "Composed of humans, the society, whatever it is in essence, will forcibly manifest the same qualities than the humans involved." - Fernando Pessoa

We can just deduce that a change on the egoistic nature of the individual is the only way of start making an actual change. Otherwise the system will just converge back to its original center. It is essential for the human species to learn taking care of one another. Rather than save the planet campaigns we need a very well designed education system capable of giving an important social and philosophical education starting on very early stage.

Fernando Pessoa in "(II)F. Any civilized society is characterized..." ( http://arquivopessoa.net/textos/1767 ) states: "Progress is the rebellion against the specie.".

I believe a general rebellion to those negative traits of our own specie is the only way to propagate a change through this complex system and consequently benefit *every* _individual_. https://loadaverage.org/attachment/5168197

@JordiGH a VPN provider is a serious choice to make. You're going to be sending them ALL of your traffic and have to take their word for it that they won't log it or alter it. What if PIA runs on hard times and has to choose between selling your data and feeding their kids? What if they get served a secret sopeana? These are questions you HAVE to ask yourself when choosing a VPN provider. Having that decision make for you by Purism is highly questionable.

Plus, it shows favoritism to a specific commercial service provider, which I don't like. If they had shipped with built-in OpenVPN or Wireguard support with an option to select a VPN provider from a bunch of them, that'd be much much better.

    The cutting laser works!!!

We successfully had it cut though 3mm plywood unsupervised!!!!!

The line is nice and thin and it is very very precise.

It takes longer than the CNC machine, and instead of dust there are fumes to worry about so we are making a better enclosure, but it works!!
