@kaniini it's the old "tell everybody you have two billion dollars and no we can't tell you where they are from or show you any proof we have them, and then everybody goes 'yes this seems plausible' and lets you buy stuff with them" hustle
the short version is they might be pulling the most hilarious scam via tether wherein they tell everybody that they have two billion dollars and then everybody just believes them
* a huge canadian exchange QuadrigaCX kind of up and disappeard * they might be insolvent * they're owned by a company that also owns 5 exchanged, 4 of which recently imploded. number 5: bitfinex * bitfinex might be properly insolvent * this means tether would be also * money of the future
@bstacey@tomharris come and join us at university of Bremen, which is a very young university, so nearly all buildings are from the 70s and depending on your point of view either Triumphs of Brutalist Architecture or Ugly Sores Upon the Earth
* I have no idea why. they are all in a certain folder, but the list of files that are gone follows no discernible pattern wrt age, name/extension, file size, path, in git repo or not...
* our backups only go back 1mo, they disappeared before that.
* fortunately, I have all the files they‘re generated from, so fixing this is maybe 2h of work.
* but still: why and how did these files disappear??
honestly though it just kills me that the official stance of the UK government and parliament on this whole debacle appears to be pretty much "who knew that this was going to be so complicated!!!!"
