@Moon @cy @dude @lnxw37a2 @sim @tk I've been thinking of ways to try to improve math education since I'm not the biggest fan of how it's taught and the educational materials produced for it.

@normandy @Moon @cy @dude @lnxw37a2 @sim @tk to me it feels like the biggest impediment is the syntax being a mess. like the actual concepts for the "normal" things (calc 3, diffeq, linear algebra etc) are pretty straightforwards and easy, but trying to learn them via equations and mathspeak takes forever. need someone to just explain it in common language

@normandy @lnxw37a2 @cy @dude @sim @tk I have tried learning on my own and it still sucks.

@lnxw37a2 @tk @cy @dude @sim I awlays wonder if math's reputation of being confusing and hard has to do with how it's taught in schools.

@tk The current 'reform' tries to get kids to 'derive' knowledge that took thousands of years to accumulate, instead of teaching facts and the stories of how we learned them. Critical thinking has never been a goal of K-12 education, only of post-secondary. No employer wants to hire an 18 year old that argues about the tasks they're assigned. They want obedience without thinking. And preparing bodies for factories was one of the foundational intentions of compulsory schooling.@cy @dude @sim
