@lain They got their monopoly by making the case that utilities have "natural monopolies" and that allowing competitors to operate in the same areas would multiply costs, while adding interop headaches. They then sought to drive independent operators out of business. Even GTE (now Verizon) felt the pressure, even though they were a miniature version of AT&T. @Moon @djsumdog @se7en

@feld @lain I've never been to Iowa, but I've noticed multiple people saying it isn't a great place. I've worked in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri for months at a time and never found any of them as a whole to be horrible. What's special about IA?

@Moon @shmibs @methyltheobromine I don't know what they did to Red Delicious apples ... they used to taste far better than they do now. When I was 22-23, they were more than half my diet.

@tk The current 'reform' tries to get kids to 'derive' knowledge that took thousands of years to accumulate, instead of teaching facts and the stories of how we learned them. Critical thinking has never been a goal of K-12 education, only of post-secondary. No employer wants to hire an 18 year old that argues about the tasks they're assigned. They want obedience without thinking. And preparing bodies for factories was one of the foundational intentions of compulsory schooling.@cy @dude @sim
