The decline of family farms will never reverse until we reverse policy that gives preference to giant agricorps
-
@Moon don't think that's possible with current food consumption habits? (eating meat all the time and throwing like half of stuff out
-
This isn't even a "we need government to fix this" argument it's "please stop giving preferential treatment to giant farms" argument.
-
@Moon there is monopsony problem pushing out smalls for stuff like that too, yeh, only buyer says "must do exactly this
-
@shmibs It is not possible to go back 100% to small farms. But yes there is a significant degree of change that has to take place. Another was very aggressive FDA standards on things like produce and eggs. You used to be able to sell different grades of produce but rules changed and effectively you have to throw out a large part of your crop that is not aesthetically pleasing enough to be grade-A.
-
@Moon imagine rich company doesn't just buy behaviour enforcement i guess
-
@shmibs imagine a FDA that could say something as simple as "there is no healthy amount of refined sugar in a diet."
-
@shmibs meat consumption is 3x what is was half a century ago. american diets are perverted by regulatory capture of dietary standards set by the federal government.
-
@cell @Moon (i eat soy because both
-
@Moon @shmibs it's a "you eat soy cause you're poor" kind of thing, not a "you eat soy cause it's a deliberate lifestyle choice"
-
@Moon @shmibs over on the other side of the world the cuisine and diets here still tend towards low-animal protein in spite of the fact that animal protein is now incredibly accessible. then again abundant sources of vegetable protein traditionally helped make up for that deficit
-
@Moon grew up with seasonal citrus in the back yardmore hot dry summers killed the trees; too sad :cthink apart from those, though, stuff eat here isn't really seasonal; chilis can grow all year and spinach in grow box nowkinda tangent conversation, sorry; just thinking. what stuff usually you eat there?
-
@shmibs and finally, remember seasonal fruit and vegetables? Americans now expect almost everything year-round. Wasn't like that when I was a kid.
-
@Moon your personal usual diet
-
@shmibs here or the midwest
-
@Moon three meals a day, waosounds very meriken diet
-
@shmibs normally though for breakfast I eat one slice of toast with jelly and orange juice, or yogurt with granola and raspberries and blueberries.for lunch I eat a sandwich with either whole grain bread or white sandwich bread, turkey and cheddar cheese slice. or two.for dinner I will eat a wide variety of stuffon saturday I eat a pizza
-
@shmibs all my stuff is packed so I my diet is really really bad right now, so bad I am ashamed to even say it.
-
@Moon mmm mmmhere made resolution this year trying very hard eat something every day, but it's pretty inconsistent still
-
@shmibs I frequently skip breakfast but I almost always eat a very large dinner
-
@Zettour @Moon problem of meat consumption is its inefficiency, leading to way more plants having to be grown, leading to more more factory farming with soil depletion and bad pesticides and run-off and worse quality plants and antibiotic resistance
-
@Moon @shmibs Why does meat consumption in particular concern you? I think the 25% increase in calories over the last 40 years from grains and oils is the cause of our obesity and therefore health problems.
