@shmibs you've already bought the product by the time you have have to deal with the sticker. It's cheaper for them to do it this way.

@Hyolobrika @lain people working for money have incentives diverge further from customers (take your money is my goal) than do people working for passion from patrons (make you happy is my goal

@lain @shmibs I mean, I would assume that taking money by force means you don't have to be as helpful to clients and can more easily get away with annoying stickers. So I was confused when you made that argument.I think it's the opposite pretty much everywhere in the world to my knowledge.

@lain @shmibs this conversation is making it sound like the used book stores are taking money by force and the libraries are working for it

@lain @Hyolobrika the customers would get more happiness from someone motivated to provide itwhich some used book people are (like cute older lady who runs antique shop here), just like library workers have some money-motivation because can't otherwise survive. on the whole, though, library workers (i was one of those for a while) are more motivated most by 'providing good service to people', or else they would work somewhere else that requires less work and fewer years of training for more money. this means they are willing to take less money for providing more satisfying service. while the used-book-warehouse does not care about customer needs at all, satisfying them only to a degree that maximises profit for minimal effort

@lain @Hyolobrika in modern marketised environment, though, this effect is reduced, as high-level management *is* profit-incentivised, maximising its own profits by giving the workers more and more work for less and less money until they can no longer sustain imbalance and the end happiness of the customer/patron is reduced again

@shmibs @lain wages, rent, utilities, taxes and shipping (in the case of online stores) arent free, when i go to a used bookstore rather than a library giveaway i'm either going to brows shelves and find a hidden gem or ordering something online that is out of print and isn't available digitally. sure there are shitty used bookstores just like there are shitty businesses everywhere but even then people are paying for used books to be distributed rather than ending up in a landfill because nobody who happened to be at the library offload was interested.

@shmibs @Hyolobrika customers give money for happiness, this is what's optimized for. The only way to 'exploit' this is monopoly, which is usually force applied by the state. I have no sympathies for force applied by private actors either.

@shmibs @lain does this also apply to recycling centers and thrift stores since they take stuff people don't want (often for free or even paid for by the supplier in the case of many recyclers) and make it into a product?

@lain @Hyolobrika and another way of saying that is "some people get more happiness from sources that can't be had for money"that discrepancy means "optimal happiness" and "optimal money" systems diverge
