p (p@freespeechextremist.com)'s status on Wednesday, 02-Nov-2022 03:25:20 JST p Super busy day *but* I just saw this: https://theintercept.com/2022/10/31/social-media-disinformation-dhs/ . The Biden laptop stuff being censored on Twitter ahead of the election was at the behest of the DHS, the Alex Jones stuff, all of it. :hunterbiden:
Fedi (at time of writing, we're at 9,760 instances, 6,112,225 people, 608,030,888 public posts) is immune to the primary effects of this, which is awesome: to censor almost 10k instances, you'd need to compromise an unprecedented number of people.
I figure probably everyone knew about the government censorship and popaganda, but we've got confirmation at this point, and I figure someone should check on @11112011 to make sure he's okay.

Hey Nolan Waters,
You are part of the poorly educated and media illiterate society you talk about.
Yet somehow you think you have a handle of what reality is
Cultivate some epistemic humility
Go jump into a croc pit
Go fuck the moon -
Nolan Waters (nolesw6@mstdn.social)'s status on Wednesday, 02-Nov-2022 03:25:20 JST Nolan Waters @p @11112011 how does a poorly educated media illiterate society begin to understand the difference between what’s real information and what’s false. I can go to two major news sites front pages and see what looks like two different realities. Censorship is bad however harmful false news that’s meant to tear apart society seems worse.

> how does one "know" anything
just guess
just use your bayesian reasoning to cope and stop having unreasonable expectations for a inherently unknowable and chaotic world
live with risk instead of casting science or authority into religion -

> all our news outlets are fake news just in service of bigger, establishment lies.
exactly! that's what i meant about media literacy only helping you so much, because everything is basically a lie
it becomes about figuring out how to construct narratives you have faith in when all the materials available are dubious -

it only gets harder and harder when you reach the point of being like "well, the news sucks, but maybe i can find some objective truth in studies and data points" and realizing that that is a very similar mess
how does anyone /know/ anything? serious question -
Infected Moomin (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Wednesday, 02-Nov-2022 04:13:21 JST Infected Moomin @MischievousTomato @11112011 @p @NolesW6 @rats that is just one really big one, they lie to us all the time about smaller things. it is done with an agenda. of course there is fake news like they are talking about but all our news outlets are fake news just in service of bigger, establishment lies. -

The media also even has the power to turn people against each other in spectacular ways. -

i feel like i'm pretty media literate and i /still/ struggle with this
feel like i need to just be constantly adjusting my bullshit detector
i deal with it mainly by only trying to care about things that i can 'do something' about / would require some change from me, doing whatever changes or preparations make sense or feel appropriate, and assuming that + everything else i ever hear is some to-be-determined mix of fact and lie -

your data > no data >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> junk data from entities with ulterior motives
it's the same thing as ads. all news can do is harm you so limiting exposure is the only solution. be extremely selective of what you choose to read* and level up your ability to collect local data and operate without knowing.
*unless it's funny. always believe the funniest option. -
