> how does a poorly educated media illiterate society begin to understand the difference between what’s real information and what’s false.
i feel like i'm pretty media literate and i /still/ struggle with this
feel like i need to just be constantly adjusting my bullshit detector
i deal with it mainly by only trying to care about things that i can 'do something' about / would require some change from me, doing whatever changes or preparations make sense or feel appropriate, and assuming that + everything else i ever hear is some to-be-determined mix of fact and lie -

it only gets harder and harder when you reach the point of being like "well, the news sucks, but maybe i can find some objective truth in studies and data points" and realizing that that is a very similar mess
how does anyone /know/ anything? serious question -

> all our news outlets are fake news just in service of bigger, establishment lies.
exactly! that's what i meant about media literacy only helping you so much, because everything is basically a lie
it becomes about figuring out how to construct narratives you have faith in when all the materials available are dubious
