    it's messed up that "electrons are generally in a place but sometimes they are instead randomly in a different place and when designing modern computers we have to account for this" is crudely true

      we then put these computers in a satellite that allows us to know where we are anywhere in the world, but of course for this to work we have to account for the fact that on the satellites time goes slower because they go fast.

      anyways physics should, in my opinion, stop

      or does it go faster because there's less gravity? anyways GPS needs to account for relativity is all

      @codl I think it goes slower due to the satellites going fast but it does more faster due to the satellites being away from the earths mass so overall time runs a bit faster on the GPS satellites (where "a bit" is actually so much faster that if this wasn't accounted for GPS would drift by several kilometers per day)

      @codl http://www.astronomy.ohio-state.edu/~pogge/Ast162/Unit5/gps.html yeah I think I remembered it roughly right

      @amphetamine for me it's just like, you're used to thinking of stuff like "quantum tunneling" and "general relativity" as Interesting Things you can Show in a Laboratory but actually you use technical systems every day that would not function if we didn't have a good understanding of both of those concepts

      @halcy It gets better:

      Gold? It's that colour because of relativistic effects. Like, the Oldest Aesthetic relies on relativity.

      Also while confirming that I remembered that correctly I found out that lead-acid batteries are actually a relativistic effect and fuck everything about that.
