Holy shit, Facebook is paying teenagers to install a root certificate on their phones so they can snoop on all of their internet traffic
Not a joke, this is actually a thing which is happening right now
The demo I'm working on at this hackathon is for a secure way of hosting content so that if your instance goes down, your content can survive, and if your content becomes popular, the whole network can help balance the work of hosting it. #activitypub #wizardstower2019
Today I learned about this very handy GNU Bash feature:
cat < /dev/tcp/127.0.0.1/22
How do you check if a remote port is reachable when you do not have any of nc, telnet, wget, curl, and the such? This is how you do it!

This is an interesting idea: a chat over e-mail. Basically an e-mail client that looks like a chat, in a way.
In case you missed it:
- I released some #minimalist #brutalist #CSS, https://emsenn.net/projects/oats
- I'm sharing the in-progress draft of my #Fantasy canon, #Teraum, https://wordsmith.social/emsenn/teraum
- And the in-progress draft of my #TableTop #RolePlayingGame rules, #BraveOldWorld https://wordsmith.social/emsenn/brave-old-world
- I wrote a simple Cultural Guide for #Fediverse Newcomers https://emsenn.net/docs/cultural-guide-for-fediverse-newcomers
@cwebber I made these diagrams, can you please tell me if my understanding is correct?

And finally, a feature that you will not want.
* unix.stackexchange.com/a/46516…
Over many years, people have regularly asked for a terminal emulator where the line progression goes from bottom to top. The idea that they have is that they will find this easier than top to bottom. In response to a recent question in the same vein on Stack Exchange, I have given console-fb-realizer, console-ncurses-realizer, and console-termio-realizer the ability to realize displays with the line progression reversed.
Having used this, it seems to me that people only want this because they have not tried it. Trying it makes a convincing case for not using it. So I have retained this feature in order that, at long last, there is an actual terminal system with this feature that people can try, and come to the same realization. (-:
@kaniini I'm probably more lax than I should be but definitely beyond the average user. Agree entirely on pro failures but not nearly enough is done for the individual level to make it understandable and accessible to people, making them the massive weak link. People laugh about 'end user errors' a lot but quietly don't actually address it and instead keep everything ambiguous.
@belghast @kaniini exactly. It's "haha your password is bad you fool, you imbecile" and so rarely "here's why your password is insecure, the reason we suggest you jump through these hoops, and what it could mean for you if something is compromised"
I use my in-laws as an example of how these things are done. The former is incredibly insulting and at times infantalising, but too the latter is almost always phrased in a jargony way they wouldn't understand at all.
