@jeremiah git has features that help you when you have a massive project with many people with commit rights. I don't think any other free VCS competes with that. Git and Mercurial are very similar for smaller projects except Mercurial is simpler to use
At this point though network effect means more people are using git so you probably should use git so I can't completely disagree with you. -

@oct2pus semantic markup becomes really important because it can give the screen reader hints what parts are relevant to the reader. like it would suck if it started reading all the header menu items on every page before the content. -
