@shmibs @7 the concept of privilege. You've heard people say "let's unpack that" that came from "unpacking your invisible biases you carry with you"
-
@shmibs @7 some terms like "invisible knapsack" didn't even appear until the mid-nineties, people who have decided that these ideals are the pinnacle of enlightenment aren't much older than the ideals
-
@shmibs so like most of my educational career the thing promoted was post-racial harmony. then people started saying salad bowl not melting pot and it started changing very rapidly after that.
-
@7 @shmibs yeah a salad bowl has discrete, unbroken chunks in it.when I first heard it I thought the person was joking because who could possibly think that wouldn't just result in a completely dissociative society with no shared values and a police state to keep order
-
@shmibs for most of my life "cultural appropriation" wasn't a thing.
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad this guy's a tooi but a ton of foreigners leave Japan after like five years because they just don't like it anymore.
-
@CrushBead @noyoushutthefuckupdad I have heard of lontime foreign residents getting fed up with being treated badly because they were too _good_ at assimilating because there's this idea that it's simply not possible for a foreigner to
-
@Eris @CrushBead @noyoushutthefuckupdad Most Americans are still taught it as a foundational American value even if they're not a liberal, but I know what you mean.
-
@Eris @CrushBead @noyoushutthefuckupdad True, I am just saying that a lot of people absorb it and don't really question it.
-
@Eris @CrushBead @noyoushutthefuckupdad May be so, I was kind of naive and absorbed a lot of the cultural programming before it bit me in the ass.

there are two network sockets in every room, none of them worked. Now half of them work. I am declaring victory and moving on to new challenges.

@shmibs @taylan @kaia I just wasn't sure if the problem was zero gravity or less gravity.
-
@shmibs @kaia @taylan just do jumping jacks and take vitamins
-
@shmibs @taylan @kaia is the gravity issue that bad, I know you could never come back to earth without your lungs collapsing though
-
@kaia damming up rivers I guess destroys habitat of everything downstream
-
@kaia it turns out the destructive environmental threat was us all along
-
@taylan @kaia I don't believe we will solve any problems by depopulating, I believe problems get solved through increased specialization as population grows. We should be planning to populate space so we can grow without turning the planet into a hellscape.
-
@taylan @kaia I know this opinion could be written off as an unrealistic solution that prevents a realistic solution from happening so nothing happens. I just, well, we went to the moon in the 60s we should have already been populating Mars by now.
-
@taylan @kaia I'll watch it, thanks. I'm always interested in the opinion of people with domain knowledge since I don't have any.

Is this Roe v. Wade stuff a sure thing yet or what
