@shmibs >universal morality has no absolutesIs it wrong to rape a child, yes or no? Your consistent failure to answer easy questions is extremely relevant, it's my entire point that you're just pretending to hold a well reasoned opinion when it's clear to everyone you're a moral coward.Morality is objective, there's no situation in which torturing and decapitating your nephew is ever a moral good, but you would have us believe it is if enough people believe it

@shmibs The point is you're trying to pretend that being a fence-sitter is some intellectual position and that nobody can really understand what's right and wrong.I'm telling you it's easy and all you have to say is pedophilia is bad, but you refuse because being honest would torpedo your point.

@shmibs If you're not going to condemn Evil then you de-facto support it. If you strongly opposed raping hcildren you would say so.

@shmibs Irrelevant. Lots of people can think pedophilia is good and they'd all be wrong and evil for thinking that.

@shmibs @Moon @Nudhul @Secftblgirl @mrsaturday Some people think it's okay to mutilate kid's genitals, we call those people wrong and evil. Morality isn't subjective so it doesn't matter how many people are wrong about it.

@shmibs @Moon @Nudhul @Secftblgirl @mrsaturday People who do Evil are are evil, people who oppose them are opposed to them, this isn't complicated and it's very stupid to act like it is.

@Moon @deprecated You don't understand, most abstractions are just APIs to let different software and drivers talk with eachother. Windows has to be compatible with every printer made in the last 50 years so it needs endless amount of hacked together shitcode to work. Things are getting slower because there's a proliferation of garbage that you just have to write code around or nothing works.>everything used to have crippling bugs and now we have annoyances but people wouldn't tolerate a wordprocessor or OS that crashed literally every five minutes. We still have that but now it crashes on the API level either on your computer or on a server somewhere and silently retries several times, which is why your computer takes five minutes to load a web browser instead of just crashing.

@Moon @deprecated More fundamentally there hasn't ever been a time when software development was good engineering, it grew out of the idiosyncrasies of mathematicians and electrical engineers and developed so fast that developers never learned from their past mistakes and perpetually reinvented past solutions inside more and more layers of abstractions.Software has never had the shared foundational knowledge and universally agreed on best practices that other engineering disciplines have, so it's always been a mess.

@Moon @deprecated I think guild are the wrong comparison, the industrial revolution is only ~250 years old so a better comparison is fields of engineering and subfields that developed in that time frame (chemical, electrical, petroleum, automotive). These fields have solid theoretical foundations due to the underlying physical theories they use, and they've continually developed by building on those foundations. Computing as a mathematical subject is relatively recent but computing as a subfield of electrical engineering has no excuse for it's sloppiness when it's built on top of electromagnetic theory. While it's not critical for a CRUD program to work properly, it is critical for control system software to keep machinery working, but there's no way to guarantee that boeing's outsourced pajeet code is any good because mission critical software developers are trained the same way as webdevelopers (self taught searching the web for hack solutions, maybe reading one or two books). The systematic acceptance of shitcode drives good code out of the market. And while it's great that we've currently got the software engineering principles you mentioned, there is nothing stopping the next generation of engineers from completely ignoring them because "we've got new tech and moore's law and don't need that anymore". No foundations means no permanent improvements.

@shmibs >objects exist>they are in my headWe're back to solipsism. I'd ask you to be consistent but that's impossible with ideas this incoherent so I don't blame you.
