One of my biggest changes going freelance last year was moving off Windows on a daily basis. I've been running on my #Linux laptop _professionally_ for a year and a half - it may not be the most anti-establishment setup, but it's actually amazing to think "this is solved now" after so many years thinking I _need_ Windows.

Weak spots are still Google Drive/Calendar, all the various SaaS/PaaS needed, VSCode, & a Macbook on hand for graphic designs. Windows ecosystem really did just shatter tho.

@simsa04 Having trouble replying directly to this https://gnusocial.net/notice/13388628 due to server sync issues I think, but definitely - the trap of being defined by being busy is a challenge for the century ahead. I find it weird that there was this huge promise of technology automating everything, yet it actually brought about this sense of not being able to relax at all. Any good books on that that you know of?

When people stop wage-slaving and start "fulfillment labour", things won't change much, as the fulfillment-labour (the self-realization via activities one always wanted to pursue) has still been defined in terms of work and jobs. That is: As soon as people stop wage-slaving, the "real work" they thought they've been "meant" to do, disappears as well. Which is why many people in unemployment suffer so much. IMO, at the base lies a pretty simply question: As people learnt to "define" themselves via their wage-slaving/job/fulfillment-labour, their personality crumbles when they are no longer capable of doing that. Thus the important question becomes: "Who am I when I can no longer define myself via my job/fulfillment-labour?" In order for people to get rid of their addiction to work (*not*: workaholism, but their dependence on defining themselves via their activities and achievements), the 4-day working week will be a necessary step towards making people incrementally get used to a state of being in which they don't "define" themselves via their activity any more. The next step is the dissolution of "defining through one's own activity" towards "defining through activity at all", regardless whether it's "here" or "there". Then definitions like those through ones's relationships, what one has in common with others, etc., may arise Only then are people allowed to take up a pen or a chisel again. :-) When their activity is beyond addiction.

What if instead of inventing new ways to use technology, we invented new ways of using and thinking about our own time?

The 4-day working week experiments might be a bigger shift in modern civilisation mindsets than mobile phones. But it may also just balance for busier weekends, and always-on connectivity.

Doing "nothing" can be a world saver.

@simsa04 Socialising needs space, in the same way that plants need air and people need elbow room.

A healthy group has time and space to think, express, experiment, discuss, critique, review, and negotiate.

    Line breaks are a civility.

@simsa04 Yeah - a centralised site is a double edged sword. "Hooray, I can reach out to anyone anywhere" inherently defaults to connecting with everyone at the same time, which rapidly descends into attention-grabbing, especially given the short form nature. Longer, more contextual posts like these hopefully filter that out, as well as the defaulting to decentralised moderation.

@swarming Bang on. It's not a tech spin-off, it's a behavioural spin-off. Microblogging was an interesting idea, but humans rapidly ruined it in less than a decade.

Mastodon / the Fediverse is confusing and has its faults. But at its heart, the key difference is that each community CAN set its own rules. If your host sells out and a single person takes over, you CAN move somewhere else, and/or host your own.

    Freedom is never "convenient".

"Everything I do is for my grandkids, and for their grandkids."

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIb9fwgNnxs

This vid has me returning to the idea of looking more than one generation ahead. Even just two generations - that is all. And yet it seems incredibly distant and unknowable today too.

I knew my grandparents, and am dimly aware of how their world was so different. How will my grandkids' world look, and what things and skills should I be putting in place for them right now? How do I reconnect with that?
