In Tokyo there is a shop called Sui Kin Chi Ka Moku Do Ten Mei Kai, written 水金地火木土天冥海. At first glance this seems a very long, hard to pronounce and difficult to remember name, so why name a shop like that? I went to find out and from there got on to the connection between the planets and the days of the week in #Japanese.

I remember visiting Sanjusangendo, some years ago, and admiring the 1001 Kannon statues inside -- and also the traces of the arrows in the eaves, from the archery contests.

@toneji Thanks for your comments. I hope my article answers the question about the nature of Kannon as a bodhisattva to some extent as that was my purpose. My article has a link to the Lotus Sutra which enumerates the 33 manifestations of Kannon and also a link to a site with a lot more information about Kannon. It is a very interesting topic.

A while ago a came across a curious random fact: of the 50 tallest statues in the world, 18 are of a being called Kannon in Japanese, Guanyin in Chinese. Of these tall Kannon statues, 12 are in Japan.

So why are there so many giant Kannon statues in #Japan?

I went down the rabbit hole to find out and wrote a blog post about it.

tl;dr: these statues are almost invariably built either as tourist attractions or as war memorials.

@Eidon @Meandres fwiw, I would put in the に because it sounds a bit odd otherwise. Without the に, just ここは would work for example ここはいい喫茶店です "this here is a good coffee shop"

But your sentence has the meaning, the coffee in this place is delicious, so the に says "in".

You could also say ここのコーヒー, "this place's coffee"

I got a very special present from my PhD student on finishing their PhD.

In 1937, IBM launched the IBM 805 Test Scoring Machine, the first device for processing standardized tests. However, the marks could only be read using a special graphite that was highly conductive. This lasted until the 1960s when the electrical conductivity method was replaced by optical mark recognition. The Dixon company produced this pencil, the Sense-a-mark 2100, for a long time but now it is a collector's item.
